The average occupancy rate of Macau’s hotel rooms fell by 27.9 percentage points year-on-year to 34.2% in May, impacted by ongoing travel restrictions across mainland China.
The May result, which saw 5-star hotel occupancy drop below the sector average to just 31.3%, included a 39.9% decline in the number of guests to 457,000 with mainland guests falling by 48.8% to 338,000. Local guest numbers increased by 28.1% to 87,000.
For the first five months of 2022 combined, the average occupancy rate of hotel rooms decreased by 14.1 percentage points year-on-year to 37.3%, while the number of guests fell by 24.4% to 2,200,000.
According to the Statistics and Census Service, 2,900 visitors to Macau joined local tours – a decline of 65% year-on-year – with the number of Macau residents purchasing outbound services (transport, accommodation and sightseeing tours) through travel agencies down by 88.0% to 3,300.
