Tinian Diamond Casino nearing completion, tipped to open in Q3

One of up to three casino projects planned for the CNMI island of Tinian is said to be in the final stages of completion, with its long-awaited opening now tipped for the September quarter.

Commonwealth Ports Authority (CPA) chairwoman Kimberlyn King-Hinds told the Saipan Tribune this week that Tinian Diamond Casino was currently awaiting final inspections after its developer, Bridge Investment Group (BIG), completed upgrade works on a waste treatment facility. The company has also reportedly begun hiring workers for an associated ferry service that will link Tinian with neighbouring Saipan.

“The casino itself is almost done, if not done already,” King-Hinds said.

“I think what’s pending is the issue with the wastewater treatment facility. One of the issues that CPA had with the facility opening was the waste treatment facility situation. But from all accounts, the casino is in the process of completing the permitting requirements and the infrastructure. The waste treatment facility has been built and it’s just awaiting final inspection.

“By all accounts, once that’s done, within probably the next two weeks, there’s expectations that the facility will open up.”

Originally scheduled to open in March 2019, Tinian Diamond Casino will offer 20 gaming tables and 80 slots plus VIP accommodation and a fine dining restaurant, while the ferry is slated to carry 290 people and more than 30 cars.

“The whole area is being leased from CPA,” King-Hinds added.

“On one side is the actual casino, and then right behind that is a multipurpose building, which is looking like what they’re going to open up as their hotel.

“We’re always looking forward to seeing new businesses open. Obviously, that equals jobs for the people and contribution to the Tinian economy.”

While Tinian Diamond Casino looks like finally becoming reality, two other casinos on the island are not faring as well. Alter City Group, which was awarded a license to develop a US$1.2 billion integrated resort, stalled on the project after breaking ground in 2016 and has since had its license suspended for failure to meet its required annual payments.

Meanwhile, existing property Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino, which filed for bankruptcy in 2015, remains closed with liabilities of over US$250 million. It was also fined US$75 million for money laundering violations.
