The number of visitor arrivals into Macau for the first six days of the Lunar New Year Golden Week grew 23.6% year-on-year to 95,696, according to information from the Public Security Police Force.
Visitor arrivals peaked on Thursday 3 February with 21,972 people arriving in Macau, up 26.6% compared with the corresponding day in 2021, while the 18,954 visitor arrivals on Saturday 5 February was 31.7% higher than the same day last year.
However, the daily average of 15,949 visitor arrivals is still 90.1% lower than in 2019 when 1.21 million visitors or 172,857 per day entered Macau. It is also 57.2% lower than 2020’s figure of 37,300 visitors per day.
The primary points of arrival have been the Border Gate, where 42,832 people have crossed into Macau, followed by Hengqin Port with 24,725. Another 16,414 have arrived by air with smaller numbers arriving via six other entry points.
Visitor arrivals from mainland China are up 26.8% year-on-year over the first six days of Golden Week to 89,245 of which 39,774 have entered via the Border Gate.
Figures for the full seven days of the Chinese New Year holiday period are due to be published later today.
While visitor arrival figures show improvement over last year, they continue to be constrained by the recent tightening of border restrictions and some ongoing travel advisories affecting travel within mainland China.
Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau this week reported gross gaming revenue of MOP$6.34 billion (US$793 million) in January, down 20.9% year-on-year and 20.3% lower than December.
