Individuals who visit Macau via Zhuhai city must now provide a negative COVID-19 virus test result obtained within the previous 24 hours after Zhuhai detected 10 positive cases over the weekend.
The latest measures comes just days after Macau health authorities reduced the validity period from seven days to 48 hours as a result of an outbreak in Zhongshan city, with the fast action on adjusting border policy reflecting concerns over the transmissibility of the Omicron variant.
Zhuhai conducted two rounds of mass testing for all residents after Zhongshan detected a positive case on 13 January, with the measure returning 10 positive cases in Nanping Town. The Zhuhai government immediately locked down Nanping Town before Macau introduced its new 24-hour test requirement.
Zhuhai is also running further rounds of mass testing over three days from 16 to 18 January.
Macau had not reported any positive cases as of Sunday, however around 17,700 people have been tested after visiting the medium-risk areas of Zhuhai and Zhongshan.
Macau’s government also announced last week a new tracing app system that requires hospitality venues – including hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, saunas, massage parlours, health clubs and karaoke lounges – to display venue codes at their premises. Customers must scan the code before entering each venue as of 15 January 2022.
