MGM Resorts’ Osaka integrated resort is projected to include 2,500 hotel rooms across three hotel brands, 730,000 square feet of MICE space and tourism facilities to showcase the best of Osaka and Japan.

First details of the integrated resort concept by MGM and local partner ORIX Corp were released Tuesday following confirmation by Osaka prefecture and city that the consortium had been chosen as its preferred IR partner.

MGM subsequently issued a press release of its own in which it stated its IR, to be developed on Osaka’s man-made Yumeshima Island alongside Osaka Port, is “designed to help establish Japan as a top global tourist destination, with Osaka serving as an internationally celebrated city for international business, travel and world-class amenities and entertainment.

“The company has had a full-time development team in Japan for more than seven years, engaging with Japan’s business communities, immersing in Japanese culture and laying the foundation for a project that embodies Japan’s unique history and heritage.”

Among the facilities to feature at the IR are three hotels – MGM Osaka, MGM Villas, and MUSUBI Hotel – offering a variety of dining and food and beverage offerings, retail space, a spa, fitness center and banquet halls.

There will be around 400,000 square feet of conference facilities with capacity to accommodate more than 6,000 visitors plus 330,000 square feet of exhibition space, including an Innovation Laboratory. Yumeshima Theater will host up to 3,500 guests.

Finally, the IR will facilitate the formation of a “Showcase of Japanese Tourism” plan for the area surrounding the resort to establish Osaka as a gateway for wider tourism in Japan, with facilities to include Kansai Tourism Center, Garden Theater, Japan Food Pavilion and Kansai Art & Culture Museum.

The company said it anticipates a project cost of around US$10 billion, employing 15,000 people and attracting 20 million visitors annually.

“It is an honor to be selected as Osaka’s partner in developing an integrated resort,” said MGM Resorts CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle.

“I commend the city in undertaking a comprehensive and thoughtful process to meet its goal of developing a world-class integrated resort in Osaka. We will work closely with prefectural/city municipal governments to deliver an iconic, uniquely Japanese destination warranting Osaka’s selection as home to one of Japan’s first integrated resorts.

“Nowhere is the future of tourism and hospitality more exciting than Japan, and Osaka is the perfect location for that future to begin. We couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to help enhance and grow Osaka’s reputation as a world-class destination and gateway for the world to the wonders and rich history of Japan.”
