Macau’s unemployment rate fell by 0.1 percentage points to 2.8% in the three-month period from June to August 2021, however most of those either unemployed or without a job completely are those linked with gaming and junket activities.
According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), the number of unemployed in Macau decreased by 400 from the May to July period to 10,600, however of those currently searching for a new job, “most of them were previously engaged in Gaming & Junket activities and in the Construction sector.”
The number of underemployed grew by 1,000 to 14,400 which was also largely comprised of those working in the Gaming & Junket and Construction sectors.
Macau’s underemployment rate increased by 0.2 percentage points to 3.7%.
DSEC said both the unemployment rate and underemployment rate remained consistent with the same period in 2020, while the labour force participation rate dropped by 1.7 percentage points.
