Australia’s Star Entertainment Group has topped out the first of up to five mixed-use towers it plans to develop alongside The Star Gold Coast.
The AU$400 million (US$310 million), 53-storey tower, which will house a 313-room Dorsett Hotel plus 422 one and two-bedroom apartments, stands 178 meters tall and will connect to The Star Gold Coast’s main Star Grand hotel upon opening early next year.
It also represents a significant milestone under Star’s AU$2 billion Gold Coast masterplan to create a world-class resort destination similar in scale to Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands.
“Three years ago, when we started construction, there was no indication a global pandemic was around the corner, so to be able to reach this milestone on time and on budget is thanks to all the hard-working people involved,” project director Jamie Cali told The Gold Coast Bulletin.
“We have also been able to maintain targets by using local south-east Queensland and Australian manufacturers and suppliers wherever possible to reduce the risk of supply chain issues.”
Construction of a second AU$400 million hotel and apartment tower at The Star Gold Coast began earlier this year, which at 63-storeys tall will add another 210 five-star hotel rooms and 457 apartments when complete in 2024. It will also offer retail stores, food and beverage outlets and a luxurious day spa and wellness center.
Star’s masterplan is a three-way joint project alongside Hong Kong’s Chow Tai Fook and Far East Consortium, and will likely see three more towers built in the coming years after the Queensland government last year abandoned plans for a second Gold Coast casino.
The partners are also developing the AU$3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf Development in Brisbane.
