The number of visitors arriving in Macau reached more than 21,000 on Wednesday, the first time visitor arrivals have surpassed 20,000 since a family of four local residents tested positive to COVID-19 on 3 August.
The increase comes after Macau’s Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre announced earlier this week that, effective from 25 August, individuals crossing the border Guangdong Province need only present a negative COVID-19 test result obtained within the previous seven days, extended from just 48 hours.
The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said Thursday it has been actively promoting the eased border measures via its official accounts on WeChat, Weibo, Xiaohongshu, Douyin and by other means.
Macau welcomed 789,407 visitors in July, up 49.4% on June, however visitor numbers have dipped significantly as a result of the positive COVID-19 cases detected in Macau and across mainland China in early August.
A mass testing blitz subsequently conducted on all Macau residents in the following days detected no further cases.
