The occupancy rate of Macau’s hotels and guesthouses in June fell 16.8 percentage points compared with May to 45.3%, impacted by an outbreak of COVID-19 in Guangdong Province that saw border restrictions temporarily tightened.
Although the number of guests checking in also declined by 38.2% to 469,000, it represented a significant improvement over the 134,000 guests in June 2020 when hotel occupancy was just 11.8%.
According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) there were a total of 116 hotels and guesthouses open for business in June, an increase of seven year-on-year.
For the first six months of 2021 combined, average hotel occupancy was up 23.2 percentage points year-on-year to 50.4%, with the number of guests improving by 84.5% to 3,378,000. Average length of stay increased by 0.1 nights to 1.8 nights.
Inbound package tours remain suspended, although the DSEC said 6,500 visitors joined local tours during the month.
Analysts are estimating improved results when the DICJ reports July’s gross gaming revenue on Sunday, with June’s GGR figure of MOP$6.54 billion (US$817.2 million) having been Macau’s lowest monthly result of 2021.
