Macau’s mass market gaming segment proved to be the driving force behind a Q2 recovery, with mass market baccarat recording a 15.4% increase over the March quarter to MOP$13.92 billion (US$1.74 billion).
According to data published by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau on Friday, total Macau gaming revenue for the June quarter reached MOP$25.58 billion (US$3.20 billion), up 7.4% sequentially and almost 700% compared with 2Q20, when revenue reached just MOP$3.23 billion (US$404 million).
At MOP$13.92 billion, mass baccarat represented 54.4% of GGR compared with 50.6% in Q1, while VIP baccarat saw its share fall from 38.3% to 33.2% on a 6.8% fall in revenue to MOP$8.50 billion (US$1.06 billion).
Macau’s 1Q21 revenue results reflect rising visitation to Macau from mainland China through April and May, albeit tempered somewhat by an outbreak of COVID-19 in parts of Guangdong Province which saw some border restrictions temporarily reinstated in June.
The DICJ reported Macau’s highest GGR since January 2020 in May 2021 at MOP$10.45 billion (US$1.31 billion), before falling back to MOP$6.54 billion (US$817.2 million) in June. However, analysts are estimating a 50% rebound in July to more than US$1 billion.
