Macau’s COVID-19 recovery trajectory slowed down in June, with gross gaming revenue falling 37.4% compared with May to MOP$6.54 billion (US$817.2 million).
The month-on-month decline followed an outbreak of COVID-19 in neighboring Guangdong Province in late May, which saw border restrictions between Macau and mainland China tightened and mandatory quarantine measures imposed on arrivals from parts of Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Foshan. Analysts had since warned that the new restrictions would impact gaming demand.
According to information published by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, June’s GGR figures represented an 812.5% improvement over June 2020, when Macau recorded GGR of just MOP$716 million (US$89.5 million) – the single lowest point since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, June 2021 GGR is also the lowest monthly GGR figure recorded this year, falling well below the previous low of MOP$7.31 billion (US$913.4 million) recorded in February.
For the first six months of 2021 combined, Macau has recorded GGR of MOP$49.02 billion (US$6.13 billion), up 45.4% over the same period last year.
