Macau gaming concessionaire MGM China has postponed the launch of its new resident show, “MGM Awakening Lion”, for three months in response to tightened restrictions related to an outbreak of COVID-19 in neighbouring Guangdong Province.
The show, to be held at MGM Cotai’s MGM Theater, had been scheduled to hold its first sessions from 8 to 13 July but MGM said Thursday it had now delayed the show’s debut until 5 October 2021.
“In response to the recent epidemic situation in neighbouring areas and in tandem with the anti-epidemic control measures by the Macau SAR government, MGM has decided to postpone the debut of the innovative ethnic dance drama ‘MGM Awakening Lion’,” the company said.
Those who purchased tickets can either exchange them for shows in October or be granted a full refund.
A collaboration between MGM China and the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre, “MGM Awakening Lion” had been touted as the first residency show in Macau since the temporary closure of Melco Resorts & Entertainment’s highly successful “The House of Dancing Water”last year. Melco has since announced its own series of residency shows to start in 2021 featuring Cantopop superstars Aaron Kwok, Joey Yung and Leon Lai.
“MGM Awakening Lion” is described as a depiction of the journey of transformation of two lion dancers in the face of love and hate along with the dilemma of choosing between family and the nation, reflecting the perseverance of the Cantonese people.
