Macau’s Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre has added seven new areas in neighboring Guangdong Province to its mandatory quarantine list.

According to information released Sunday, anyone who has visited Liwan District, Haizhu District, Yuexiu District, Panyu District or Nansha District in Guangzhou City, or Nanhai District or Chancheng District in Foshan City within the past two weeks must quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Macau.

The measures follow detection of 94 new cases of local COVID-19 infection over the past week. Several sporadic cases were spread from Liwan District to other districts in Guangzhou city and Foshan city, with the mainland China government now requiring all individuals to show a negative virus test result obtained in the previous 48 hours before leaving Guangzhou and Foshan.

The Macau SAR government has also urged residents to avoid non-essential visits to Guangzhou and Foshan until the situation of the pandemic improves. From 7 June, the government will send messages to those who have been to Guangzhou and Foshan within the past 14 days ordering them to receive a virus test within the designated period.

Although the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) to Macau remains in place, there are concerns that this latest outbreak in Guangdong Province and subsequent quarantine policy for visitors may impact the recovery trajectory of Macau’s tourism operators.

Concessionaires enjoyed their best month since January 2020 in May with GGR of MOP$10.45 billion (US$1.31 billion) representing a 24.4% improvement over April revenue of MOP$8.4 billion (US$1.05 billion).

As of 6 June, Macau requires individuals who have been to any of the following areas in mainland China to quarantine for 14 days.

Guangdong Province

  • Guangzhou City: Liwan District, Haizhu District, Yuexiu District, Panyu District, Nansha District
  • Shenzhen City: Xikeng Community, Anliang Community in Yuanshan Subdistrict of Longgang District; Qiaodong New Village under Shatoujiao Subdistrict, Shagangxu and Donghai Lijing Garden in Yantian Subdistrict, or Yantian Port in Yantian District
  • Foshan City: Yingkang Packaging Co. Ltd., Nanhai District, Chancheng Distirct
  • Maoming City: Jiuwu village at Nahuozhen Road of Dianbai District

Anhui Province

  • Lu’an City: Yu’an District
