Macau’s recovery continued through May with the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) announcing gross gaming revenue of MOP$10.45 billion (US$1.31 billion), up from MOP$8.4 billion (US$1.05 billion) in April.

The figure also represented a 482.2% increase over May 2020 – right in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic – when Macau recorded GGR of just MOP$1.76 billion (US$220.2 million).

For the first five months of 2021 combined, Macau has recorded GGR of MOP$42.4 billion (US$5.31 billion), up 28.7% over the same period last year according to the DICJ’s figures.

The rising revenue numbers come as Macau welcomes an increasing number of visitors from mainland China, including a surge during the five-day Golden Week at the start of May.

Macau’s Public Security Police Force had revealed earlier in the month that visitation during Golden Week grew by 40% from an average of 26,000 visitors per day in April to 37,000.

Saturday 1 May also saw the highest single day tally since January 2020 with 45,000 people arriving in the 24-hour period.
