The Macao Government Tourism Office revealed over the weekend that visitor arrivals reached 34,252 last Friday 16 April – the highest daily tally since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The figure was higher than the previous post-pandemic daily record of 32,647 arrivals on Friday 26 March and highlighted an upward trend for the SAR, including a total of 191,828 visitor arrivals in the week from 9 to 15 April 2021 at an average of 27,404 per day. This was 111.7% higher than the daily average of 12,947 during the recent Spring Festival Golden Week.

The MGTO said hotel establishments also saw an average occupancy rate of 61.0% between 9 and 15 April, a rise of 12.7 percentage points compared with the 48.3% occupancy of the Spring Festival Golden Week.

“The figures reveal a steady upward trend in visitor arrivals recently,” the MGTO said. “As the pandemic situation remains stable in the Mainland and Macau, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) [has seized] the opportunity brought by the reinstatement of travel permit issuance for Mainland residents to Macau to unfold an array of online and offline promotions tailored for the Mainland market, and continuously spotlight Macau as a healthy, safe and quality destination, striving to stimulate a gradual rebound in visitor arrivals and steady recovery of the tourism industry.”

According to figures from Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau on 1 April, gross gaming revenues in March reached their highest monthly total since January 2020 with GGR of MOP$8.31 billion (US$1.04 billion).
