Macau’s hotels and guesthouses suffered a slight 1.8 percentage point decline in February when compared with January occupancy rates, with occupancy at 38.5% according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
However, the figures were 23.7 percentage points higher than February 2020, when the outbreak of COVID-19 saw all 41 Macau casinos closed for 15 days. They are also expected to have risen substantially once March occupancy rates are made available given soaring visitor arrivals in recent weeks, including the highest daily and weekly tallies in 14 months recorded just last week.
Compared with February 2020 hotel occupancy, February 2021 saw the number of guests checking into hotels and guesthouses grow 147.2% year-on-year to 382,000, including a 192.0% increase from mainland China to 303,000.
For the first two months of 2021 combined, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms fell by 10.9 percentage points year-on-year to 39.4% while the number of guests fell by 32.5% to 833,000.
Once again there were no inbound package tour visitors in February after they were suspended in January 2020.
