The number of visitor arrivals to Macau fell by 15.6% sequentially and 80.5% year-on-year in January to 556,765, impacted by outbreaks of COVID-19 across parts of mainland China and a subsequent reduction in travel.
According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), January’s number compared with 659,407 visitor arrivals in December 2020 and 2.8 million in January 2020.
However, the average length of stay of each visitor grew by 0.4 days year-on-year to 1.6 days, including a 0.7 days increase for overnight visitors to 3.0 days per visit.
Of the 556,765 January visitors, 496,157 were from mainland China of which 174,554 travelled under the Individual Visit Scheme. A total of 432,496 visitors, representing 83.3% of all arrivals, entered Macau through the Gongbei border gate, while only 23,930 arrived by air and 13,919 by sea respectively.
