Macau welcomed a total of 659,407 visitors in December, representing a 3.6% increase over November but down 78.6% on December 2019 numbers according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
December was the seventh consecutive month in which visitor numbers improved over the previous month, having reached a low of 22,556 in June, although the rate of increase slowed versus 9.3% in November and 29.6% in October.
Of the 659,407 to arrive in Macau in December, 390,300 stayed at least one night while 269,107 were same-day visitors. The average length of stay increased by 0.3 days compared with December 2019 to 1.5 days.
Visitor arrivals from mainland China fell 71.0% year-on-year to 606,884 in December of which 261,297 used the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) following its resumption from August.
For all of 2020, visitor arrivals fell 85.0% year-on-year to 5,896,848.
They included 4,754,239 arrivals from mainland China, down 83.0% year-on-year, and 1,865,152 via IVS. Visitors from Hong Kong (843,165) and Taiwan (104,124) fell by 88.5% and 90.2% year-on-year respectively.
The vast majority of 2020 arrivals at 5,033,614 or 85.4% arrived by land, with just 436,936 coming by air and 426,298 by sea.
