Australian racing and wagering giant Tabcorp says it has mostly restored all services following a major outage on Saturday that prevented customers from being able to place bets on racing, sports and keno for more than 24 hours.
The outage, which stemmed from a fire at a third-party data center in Sydney, is said to have cost more than AU$100 million in lost turnover although Tabcorp said on Monday that the EBITDA impact was “less than AU$10 million.”
In an ASX filing, the company also insisted there was no evidence of any potential cyber security issues or customer data breaches with a comprehensive review of the situation set to be undertaken by the board. Tabcorp explained that, based on a preliminary assessment, a “smoke and likely fire incident” at the data centre had resulted in extensive damage to servers and associated infrastructure, resulting in technical and systems outages as well as the closure of TAB retail venues.
“The outage was unacceptable,” said Tabcorp Managing Director and CEO, David Attenborough.
“Tabcorp remains deeply sorry for this and acknowledges the significant disruption caused to our customers, the racing industry and venue partners.
“Our teams and technology partners are continuing to deploy all available resources into restoring the full Tabcorp gambling entertainment experience for our customers and partners.”
The outage coincided with the final day of the 2020 Melbourne Cup Carnival, traditionally Tabcorp’s most lucrative racing week of the year.
