The President of Macau’s Sports Bureau, Pun Weng Kun, says the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix will likely be canceled this year due to a lack of foreign drivers at the race.
The Macau Grand Prix has been confirmed to run from 19 to 22 November, albeit with an altered format due to COVID-19 – most significantly the flagship FIA F3 Championship being replaced by a new Formula 4 Macau Grand Prix.
Now it appears the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix will also be a notable absentee.
“The number of participants looks like it will be insufficient due to Macau’s 14-day quarantine measure, so it is highly possible that the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix will be cancelled this year,” Pun said.
With the COVID-19 pandemic spiraling out of control in a number of foreign countries – and particularly Europe where many of the riders are from – safety concerns around the Grand Prix have been growing in the community. The SAR government currently prohibits any foreign visitors from entering and has yet not flagged any potential changes to this rule.
Pun said it is very likely that no foreign drivers would participate at the Macau Grand Prix this year with drivers to come primarily from mainland China instead.
The schedule for this year’s race weekend is still being finalized and will be announced around the end of October.
