The occupancy rate of Macau’s hotels and guesthouses fell to 11.8% in June, with five-star hotels at just 5.8%, as COVID-19 continued to impact the local tourism industry.
The figures were released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) this week, with overall occupancy of Macau’s 35,000 available guest rooms declining further from a rate of 12.3% in May.
There were just 134,000 guests across all rooms throughout the month of June, of which 67,000 were from mainland China and 11,000 from Hong Kong. Local Macau guests contributed a further 53,000 as they took advantage of the many promotions currently being offered by the SAR’s struggling hotel operators.
The average length of stay of guests extended by 0.3 nights year-on-year to 1.7 nights.
For the first six months of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms fell by 63.9 percentage points to 27.2% while the total number of guests declined 73.5% to 1,830,000.
