Donaco says reopening of Star Vegas in Cambodia imminent but Thai border closure to keep volume subdued

Australian-listed Donaco International Limited says it expects to undergo assessment by Cambodia’s Ministry of Health (MOH) ahead of a planned reopening of Star Vegas in Poipet “within the next few weeks” – but it could be sometime yet before customers return.

In a business update filed with the ASX on Wednesday, Donaco confirmed that the reopening of its flagship casino remains contingent on receiving approval from the MOH and implementing certain preventive measures against COVID-19.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen gave the green light for casinos to reopen earlier this month pending MOH approval, the announcement coming almost three months after casinos across the country were closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

While the long-awaited reopening of Star Vegas appears imminent, Donaco noted that neighboring Thailand has extended its state of emergency until 31 August 2020, which is likely to impact any potential easing of border restrictions between the two countries.

“As the majority of Star Vegas’ visitors are from Thailand, Donaco expects patronage numbers will remain low at Star Vegas until the border between Thailand and Cambodia is reopened,” the company said.

“The Company is optimistic that the COVID-19 situation will continue to improve in the region Star Vegas operates in and the Cambodian Government’s announcement is a positive step towards a resumption of normal operations.”

Donaco reopened its Vietnam casino, Aristo International, in mid-May.
