The number of visitors arriving in Macau fell to just 3,268,900 in the first half of 2020, down 83.9% to from almost 20.3 million in 1H19.
According to information published by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) on Monday, the decline – a result of travel and border restrictions imposed due to COVID-19 – included an 83.6% fall in visitors from mainland China to 2,339,589 while those from Hong Kong (652,522) and Taiwan (81,628) also fell by more than 80%. There were 1,723,218 same day visitors and 1,545,682 overnight visitors, down by 84.0% and 83.7% respectively.
Visitation numbers were particularly low through 2Q20 following the introduction of border restrictions by Guangdong Province on 27 March – which were eased last week – with June seeing a massive 99.3% decline in visitors to just 22,556 from 3.1 million in June 2019.
DSEC said there were more same day visitors to Macau in June than in May, comprising 58.5% of the total, however the average length of stay of visitors subsequently declined by 3.9 days.
Visitors from mainland China in June dropped by 99.0% year-on-year to 21,067 or 93.4% of the total, with 11,235 coming from the nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Greater Bay Area. There were just 1,142 visitors from Hong Kong and 326 from Taiwan in June.
