Macau is once again COVID-19 free after authorities revealed on Friday that the patient who had been Macau’s sole remaining carrier of the virus has now been discharged from hospital.
The SAR’s 46th case of coronavirus since the pandemic began had been a 57-year-old male Macau resident returning from the Philippines and detected while in hotel quarantine at the Grand Sheraton Macao.
With the case now cleared, Dr Lo Iek Long – Deputy Director of the Board of the Centro Hospitalar Conde de São Januário (CHCSJ) – said Macau has now gone 24 days (as of Monday 20 July) without any new cases of COVID and 113 days without any community transmission.
He also revealed that a total of 13,604 nucleic acid tests had been carried out in Macau on 15 and 16 July, the first two days since border restrictions with Guangdong Province were eased. Another 4,228 tests were provided to frontline casino workers on 16 July as per new measures implemented by the Macau SAR government to ensure gaming floors remain safe.
While there are currently no active cases of COVID-19 in Macau, there are 1,694 people currently undergoing mandatory medical observation including 1,691 at designated quarantine hotels, one at home and two on a fishing vessel.
