The criminal police department of Taiwan’s internal affairs raided an office in the Neihu District of Taipei that was occupied by a UK-based game software developer “on suspicion of gambling offences” on 6 July.
As revealed at a press conference on 7 July and reported by Taiwan’s Zhongyang Tongxunshe, a total of 31 employees of Gamatron Studios were arrested, including a Japanese man who worked at the Taiwanese office and a Japanese executive.
According to police, the company provided software to 45 online casino platforms, taking between 5% and 8% of the profit from each bet placed by a customer as compensation. Police believe the total amount gambled by customers from January of last year amounted to NTD 2.5 billion (US$85 million).
In the raid, 36 computers, 35 cellphones and NTD 560,000 (US$19,000) in cash was seized along with accounting books and gambling materials.
