The average occupancy rate of Macau hotel rooms fell by 77.8 percentage points year-on-year to 12.3% in May, according to information published by the Statistics and Census Service.
The decline was felt particularly hard by the SAR’s five star hotels, which saw occupancy plummet 85.2 percentage points to 5.5% year-on-year, also down 1.1 percentage points compared with April 2020.
The number of available guest rooms decreased by 12.4% year-on-year to 34,000.
Only 116,000 guests checked into hotels and guesthouses in May, down by 89.9% compared with the same month last year, while guests from mainland China decreased by more than 90% to 71,000.
However, the average length of stay of guests extended by 0.7 nights year-on-year to 2.1 nights.
In the first five months of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms was 30.4%, dropping 61.0 percentage points year-on-year.
