Macau visitor numbers down 99.5% year-to-year for May but 46% improvement month-to-month since April

Visitor arrivals to Macau plunged by 99.5% year-on-year in May to just 16,133, according to figures released by the Statistics and Census Service.

However, the figure was substantially higher than April, when visitor numbers hit a record low of 11,041.

Although tightened border restrictions between Macau and Guangdong Province have been in place since 27 March, visitor numbers increased 46.1% month-to-month compared with April, while the average length of stay extended by 4.1 days year-on-year to 5.3 days. Notably, visitor arrivals by air totaled just 71 people.

From January to May 2020, the number of visitor arrivals to Macau has fallen by 81.1% year-on-year to 3,246,344.
