Melco Resorts and Entertainment has announced that its hugely popular resident show, The House of Dancing Water, will temporarily close down until January 2021.

Almost 10 years since first debuting at City of Dreams Macau in September 2010, Melco said The House of Dancing Water will be “re-imagined” during its extended break before returning in time for Chinese New Year. The company promised it will continue to invest in the show, which has been seen by more than six million people over the past decade.

“We are honored that our collaboration with Franco Dragone has flourished through the immense success of The House of Dancing Water,” said Melco’s Chief Operating Officer, Macau Resorts, David Sisk.

“The show will be re-imagined to offer new energy and excitement, enhancing its status as Macau’s must-see performance. As a sign of Melco’s commitment to local people, the re-imagined new show will also benefit from the continuous development of local talent.”

The decision to temporarily close down The House of Dancing Water doesn’t come as a huge surprise given the sizable cast has been performing to audiences of single and double digits due to COVID-19 border restrictions.

Inside Asian Gaming understands that Franco Dragone will be heavily involved during the closure, with Melco taking the opportunity presented by the pandemic to completely revamp the show and introduce new technologies that weren’t available when first choreographed.

Whilst it is unfortunate that the show must be suspended for an extended period, in the current environment it would be irresponsible to take any other course of action.

Indeed, we applaud Melco for turning this negative into a positive, by taking the opportunity for redevelopment and renewal. After all, there are no such opportunities when playing to packed houses night after night, which is sometimes the case with The House of the Dancing Water, the only show in Macau to have proved itself a success in the long run.
