Hainan officials have quashed suggestions that transformation of China’s southernmost province and island into a free trade port could result in the addition of gambling elements.
After the Chinese government announced the construction master framework for the first free trade port in Hainan Province last week, Hainan officials outlined further details of the plan on Monday including “six prohibitions.”
Those prohibitions include “pornography, gambling and drugs,” while smuggling, actions that damage ecological environment and corruption were also named as banned activities.
The Chinese government had launched an outline in 2018 which mentioned support to develop horse racing. Hainan Province also abolished the law which prohibiting gambling and prostitution last year, sparking speculation the province would legalize gambling in the future.
As previously reported by Inside Asian Gaming, such suggestions have been commonplace in the past but have never come to fruition.
