Macau Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng visited leaders of Guangdong this week to push for the lifting of current border restrictions between the jurisdictions, the Government Information Bureau (GCS) revealed on Wednesday.

In a meeting with the Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee Li Xi and Governor of the Guangdong Province Ma Xingrui, Ho emphasized the COVID-19 pandemic is under control in Macau and preventive measures are satisfactory.

“The SAR government will continue to monitor the development of the epidemic, and works persistently on preventing imported cases and recurrence of community transmission,” the Chief Executive underlined according to a statement from the GCS.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed arrangements for facilitating cross-border travel between Macau and Guangdong Province.

“It is believed the resumption of normal border operations between the two places would be conducive to the construction and development for the Greater Bay Area,” Ho said.

The Chief Executive’s visit on Tuesday coincided with Hong Kong extending its own border restrictions with Macau and Guangdong Province until at least 7 July, and to all other countries until September.

Ho emphasized to Li and Ma that Macau has close ties and has made considerable progress in all areas of cooperation with Guangdong, and that Macau is eager to promote construction of the Greater Bay Area to help position the “Hengqin Guangdong-Macau Deep Cooperation zone” as an example of how “One country, Two systems” should work.
