A week that is traditionally one of the busiest of the year in Macau was anything but as visitor numbers remained seriously low during the opening days of May Golden Week, but local SMEs at least enjoyed some positive news following the launch of the SAR’s MOP$3,000 e-vouchers from 1 May.

As previously reported by Inside Asian Gaming, the government issued e-vouchers to all Macau citizens in March, to be used between 1 May and 31 July 2020, with a view to stimulating the Macau economy

While data released by Macau’s Public Security Police Force showed just 260 and 340 visitors arriving into Macau on the first two days of the Labour Day holiday (437,000 people entered during 2019’s Golden Week), residents rushed out to spend their e-vouchers with an estimated MOP$125 million spent in the first two days of May alone.

The government hopes to see around MOP$1.7 billion injected into the market to stimulate domestic demand.
