While some of Korea’s foreigner-only casino operators have begun re-opening their properties over the past week, the nation’s sole casino in which locals are allowed to play, Kangwon Land, appears no closer to opening its doors.
The company announced in a filing on Wednesday that it was again extending its closure period for another week, until 11 May, taking the period Kangwon Land has been closed to 11 weeks. Facilities to remain closed include the casino, hotel, condominiums, ski resort and Water World theme park.
Kangwon Land first announced an initial three-day closure on 23 February but has extended its hiatus on multiple occasions times since, with lost revenue expected to total US$230 million.
One of South Korea’s two leading foreigner-only casino operators, Grand Korea Leisure, is yet to confirm whether it will re-open any of its three venues once its previously announced closure period ends on 6 May, however Paradise Co Ltd has re-opened its four facilities – Paradise City in Incheon, Paradise Walkerhill, Jeju Grand and Busan Casino.
