Macau’s gross gaming revenue is estimated to be running at around MOP$500 million, or MOP$100 million per day, over the first five days of April, down around 87% year-on-year.

According to Bernstein analysts Vitaly Umansky, Eunice Lee and Kelsey Zhu, the daily figure compares to an Average Daily Rate of MOP$786 million in April 2019, with the majority of revenue driven by a small number of VIP players. Inside Asian Gaming understands that a handful of high-value VIPs chose to remain in Macau after Guangdong Province announced on 26 March a mandatory 14-day quarantine for all people arriving from Macau and Hong Kong, including Guangdong residents.

With mass market GGR essentially crushed, Bernstein said it estimates a GGR decline of around 95% for the entire month of April and “closer to 100% if travel restrictions stay firmly in place.”

Data released by Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau last week revealed a 79.7% decline in GGR to MOP$5.26 billion in March.
