The Macau SAR government and Zhuhai city have agreed to tighten border control in order to prevent further imported cases of COVID-19, indicating there are no immediate plans to ease entry restrictions between the two cities.
Representatives of the Macau and Zhuhai governments held a joint meeting on 2 April in Macau at which they reviewed the current measures and policies on entry restrictions between their borders.
According to the Macau government’s press statement, the both sides “agreed to further control the border restrictions based on the development of the pandemic in order to prevent imported cases as much as possible.”
Guangdong Province announced last week that all arrivals from Macau and Hong Kong, including Guangdong residents, would be subject to a 14-day quarantine, prompting thousands of residents, tourists and mainland Chinese nationals to rush back to Zhuhai. The policy also caused another huge plunge in visitors arriving in Macau.
The mayor of Zhuhai city, Yao Yisheng, noted that restrictions between Zhuhai and Macau have to be strict but also need to offer convenience services to the public to ensure stabilization of the two communities.
Macau residents holding Zhuhai residential cards are currently the only group exempt from mandatory medical quarantine when entering Zhuhai.
