Occupancy rate of Macau’s five-star hotels at 10% in February as visitor arrivals hit record lows

The occupancy rate of five-star hotels in Macau dropped to just 10% in February, according to figures from the Statistics and Census Bureau.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the average occupancy rate of all hotel guest rooms in the SAR plunged by 76.9 percentage points year-on-year to 15% last month, while the rate in five-star hotels fell even further by 84 percentage points to 10%.

Since many guest rooms of two-star hotels and guest houses were utilized as accommodation for non-resident workers, the occupancy rate of two-star hotels and guest houses declined to 36.9% and 43.4% respectively.

Checked-in guests dropped by 85.4% year-on-year in February, with those from mainland China down by 86.3% to only 106,000.

In the first two months of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms was 50.3%, representing a drop of 42.1 percentage points year-on-year.

The number of visitors arriving in Macau also continues to fall to record lows, with just 580 arrivals in the city last Friday 27 March and 230 on Sunday.

After the Macau SAR government banned all foreign visitors from entry and imposed quarantine on Hong Kong and Taiwan arrivals, mainland China’s Guangdong Province also imposed mandatory quarantine on arrivals from Macau as of 27 March.
