Macau SAR Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng is expected to announce tighter entry policies towards arrivals from Hong Kong and mainland China on Tuesday morning, as more countries around the world edge towards lockdown.
The government will hold a press conference at 10am today, coming after Hong Kong announced a 14-day quarantine to be applied to all arrivals from Macau and Taiwan as of 25 March 2020.
The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hong Kong has been rising steadily, with 39 new cases on Monday taking the total to 356. However, Macau has until now resisted placing heavy restrictions on Hong Kong.
Health Bureau Director Lei Chin Ion revealed on Monday that Macau’s government officials were discussing further restrictions, with the Chief Executive to hold a press conference later this morning.
Infection numbers reached 25 in Macau on Tuesday, with cases 20 to 24 all residents returning from the UK or Ireland. The 25th case is a non-resident worker from Indonesia whose wife and son were previously confirmed infected. Macau currently has 15 patients undergoing treatment in hospital, with the first 10 cases having all now recovered and been discharged.
