The Macau SAR government has officially taken over the first phase of the new Macau-Hengqin checkpoint and extension areas.
The move, which sees Macau law implemented at the new checkpoint, means Macau receives a total 66,428 square meters of space including the passenger clearance building, the entry and exit platform and the main body of Lotus Bridge. Macau personnel are already stationed at the checkpoint and have inspected various facilities in the building.
The second phase of the checkpoint is expected to be finished at the end of next year, including vehicle lanes and a bridge linking Macau University. The third phase will add a reserved area linking Macau’s light rail system.
Similar to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge checkpoint, the new Hengqin checkpoint will operate 24/7 and adopt a “joint boundary control system” with Zhuhai city.
