MGM China announced the suspension of all hotel operations at its Macau integrated resorts, MGM Cotai and MGM Macau, late last week, raising the number of hotels to shut down operations in the SAR to 28.

The latest closures, a result of reduced visitation due to the Coronavirus, takes another 2,000 rooms offline, according to the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), with MGM Macau boasting 582 guest rooms and MGM Cotai around 1,390 rooms and suites. MGM has also suspended all dining and retails operations until further notice.

The MGTO had previously announced the closure of Sands China’s Four Seasons, St. Regis and Conrad hotels, SJM’s Sofitel at Ponte 16, Melco’s Altira Macau plus Legend Palace Hotel and the Rocks Hotel at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf.

Two local three-star hotels and 18 guest houses have also temporarily closed their doors.

As previously reported by Inside Asian Gaming, the hotel occupancy rate in Macau dropped to just 16% from 1 to 7 February.
