Macau’s casino operators are performing temperature tests at 405 guest entrances and 47 employee entrances as the government continues to enhance measures aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly Wuhan pneumonia virus.

After the first confirmed case of the virus being detected in Macau was announced on Wednesday, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), Macau’s gaming regulator, released a statement saying it “strictly urges all gaming companies to continue to strengthen the prevention and control measures of infectious diseases in its casinos, pay close attention to the development of unexplained pneumonia in Wuhan, and actively cooperate with prevention and control measures implemented by the SAR government in response to changes in related to infectious diseases.”

The DICJ issued a directive to the SAR’s casino operators in early January requiring that they disseminate all information related to communicable diseases to employees, install temperature-monitoring equipment at all venue entrances, monitor the physical condition of employees and patrons, and disclose the presence of anyone showing signs of fever.

It also promised to assist operators in purchasing additional temperature detection equipment.

In Wednesday’s announcement, the DICJ said that equipment was now being deployed at 405 guest and 47 employee entrances, adding that implementation of the safety measures was aimed at enhancing the enjoyment of guests during the coming Chinese New Year period.

In a statement sent to IAG, Sands China, operator of The Venetian Macao, Parisian Macao, Sands Cotai Central and Sands Macao, said, “To safeguard the health and safety of team members and guests, Sands China has implemented a series of preventive measures across its properties in accordance with guidelines from the Health Bureau and the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.”

According to the government, temperature screening has also been introduced at all Macau boundary checkpoints, including the airport, land crossing, and ferry terminals.
