Macau welcomed a total of 39,406,181 visitors in 2019, an increase of 10.1% year-on-year according to information released this week by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
The increase was primarily led by a rise in the number of same-day visitors, which grew 20.0% to 20,773,482. Conversely, constraints in room supply saw overnight visitation rise by just 0.8% to 18,632,699. The average length of stay of visitors held steady at 1.2 days.
By country, China contributed 27,923,219 visitors in 2019, up 10.5% year-on-year, with those from Zhuhai (3,246,957) and Guangzhou (2,284,292) up by 45.9% and 19.5% respectively. Korea grew 16.2% to 7,354,094 and Taiwan 0.2% to 1,063,355.
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge contributed 13.7% of all arrivals in its first full year of operation at 5,381,058, however ferry arrivals plummeted 39.5% to 6,267,619.
The 2019 increase in arrivals came despite arrivals actually falling in December, down 13.6% to 3,083,406, including a 14.5% decline in visitors from China to 2,094,810. Visitation from Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan all fell by 39.3%, 3.9% and 14.3% respectively.
