Kansai International Airport is renovating its main terminal with the goal of increasing international visitor capacity by more than 70% to about 40 million by 2025.

According to the Mainichi Shimbun, the total renovation cost is expected to be around JPY100 billion (US$920 million), including disaster prevention measures. Construction will start in 2020 and is scheduled to be complete before the 2025 Osaka/Kansai Expo.

The number of international passengers going through Kansai Airport hit an historic high in 2018 at 22.89 million. In addition to the expo, if an IR bid is successful, it is anticipated that the number of visitors using the airport will increase

Kansai Airport is 40% owned by ORIX, which is in a consortium with MGM Resorts, one of three candidates to develop an Osaka IR.
