The number of guests checking into Macau’s hotel and guesthouses fell 3.4% year-on-year to 1,119,000, impacted by fewer overnight stays from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

As previously reported by IAG, the decline is in line with the recent trend of shorter stays by tourists to Macau, with the average length of stay of visitors over the first six months falling by 0.1 days to 1.1 days.

According to information released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) this week, the number of hotel nights booked by guests from mainland China (752,000), Hong Kong (128,000) and Taiwan (38,000) dropped by 1.7%, 6.7% and 12.2% respectively, with the average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses decreasing by 0.3 percentage points year-on-year to 89.5%.

The occupancy rates of 5-star hotels (90.7%) and 4-star hotels (89.7%) fell by 0.2 percentage points and 1.6 percentage points respectively and the average length of stay of guests who stayed overnight by 0.1 nights year-on-year to 1.4 nights.

The figures come despite the addition of three new hotels and guesthouses compared with June 2018, pushing the city’s total to 119.
