The 50th anniversary of the World Series of Poker has welcomed the second biggest field in its history with 8,569 players buying in to the world’s most annual poker tournament this week.
The huge field, second only to the 8,773 who took part in 2006 at the peak of the global poker boom, has created a prize pool of US$$80,548,600 with the winner set to walk away with a hefty payday of US$10 million.
First run in 1970 when Benny Binion invited seven of the world’s best poker players to compete in a winner takes all competition at the Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas, the 2019 WSOP comprises a massive 90 individual events running from 29 May to 15 July.
The US$10,000 entry main event began last Wednesday 3 July with the winner to be crowned on Tuesday 16 July.
