MGM Cotai’s expansive indoor space, The Spectacle, has earned a spot in the Guinness World Records.
MGM revealed on Wednesday that The Spectacle now holds the record for the world’s largest free-span gridshell glazed roof (self-supporting), at the same time making it the first architectural and structural Guinness World Records title for Macau.
At a cost of US$37 million, The Spectacle is described by the company as an “immersive space of creative and dynamic design, merging nature and cutting-edge technology.”
Spanning 37 meters from floor to ceiling and covering 8,073 square meters – equal to 30 tennis courts – it was conceived by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in collaboration with ARUP and was engineered by Siu Yin Wai & Associates Limited (Hong Kong).
The roof structure itself comprises 4,365 beams and 1,531 beam nodes, with a total weight of 2,000 tons.
Other features of The Spectacle include a huge 360-degree digital canvas with 25 LED screens in varying sizes, plus a state-of-the-art indoor vertical garden with more than 100,000 plants.
