A 22-year-old student from the University of Macau died on Saturday after being struck by a car driven by a junket employee, according to local Chinese media reports.
Footage and images of the aftermath of the tragic accident have been circulating on social media over the weekend. The seven-seater van is alleged to have struck the girl near Galaxy Macau.
Reports have also claimed that the approximately 40-year-old driver, working for Seng Keng Group, was not listed as a driver on his blue card.
The victim was later identified as Ms Lei, a fourth-year student from the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of Macau.
In a statement released to students, the Dean of the Faculty said, “We are devastated and saddened to hear of the death of one of our students … passed away on 2 March 2019 after being involved in a road traffic accident.
“Our thoughts are with Ms. Lei’s family and friends at this very difficult time. We have been in touch with the family and would like to express our deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues across the campus. Ms Lei is a beloved member of FBA and UM community; and her death is a tragic loss deeply felt by the faculty and the University.”
