The Japanese government is considering displaying advertisements at major public facilities such as international airports promoting the construction of integrated resorts.
Although the IR Implementation Bill, which was enacted by the Diet in July, specifically prohibits advertising gambling as a measure against potential gambling addiction, there is an exception where the primary target audience is tourists.
The discussions formed part of a meeting on Monday of a special group comprising economists and academics that will advise the Office of Integrated Resort Regime Promotion in regards to key regulatory measures to be considered by cabinet. The meeting saw discussions between the group on regulatory standards begin in earnest for the first time since the IR Implementation Bill became law.
According to reports, the government is pushing to allow IR advertising only at airports that accept international flights – including charter flights – and at port terminals for international cruise ships.
