Final two Macau casinos re-open following Typhoon Mangkhut

The two Macau casinos forced to remain closed earlier this week in the wake of Typhoon Mangkhut are back in business.

Casino Taipa and Casino Macau Jockey Club, both located in Taipa, were the last to re-open their doors to guests after Macau Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On ordered all 42 Macau casinos closed at 11pm on Saturday night. The forced closure remained in place for 29 hours until 4am on Monday morning, with the majority of the city’s casinos quickly resuming normal operations.

However, a power outage caused by flooding prevented Casino Taipa and Casino Macau Jockey Club – which operate under the license of SJM – from opening on Monday.

SJM told IAG it needed to ensure that transformers located outside of the casinos were functioning and safe to use before resuming operations.

Casino Taipa re-opened late Tuesday while Casino Macau Jockey Club opened early Wednesday.

The construction site of SJM’s HK$36 billion Cotai IR project, Grand Lisboa Palace, managed to escape Typhoon Mangkhut without any major damage.
