Singapore’s high court has ruled in favor of Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) in a case against a Malaysian businessman who was trying to void SG$5.9 million in outstanding debt.
Lee Fook Kheun had argued that a series of credit deals he signed with RWS over the course of three days in 2010 were invalid because the operator had failed to comply with Casino Control Regulations due to him being intoxicated.
Lee borrowed SG$10 million in total and had already paid back more than SG$4 million after signing a settlement agreement in 2015 before halting payments.
According to local media, the High Court didn’t buy Lee’s arguments, stating in its judgement that, “Mr Lee has not proved on the balance of probabilities that he was so intoxicated that he failed to understand the nature and effect of the credit agreements.
“Even if this were not so, he has not rescinded the agreements; indeed his delay and conduct have affirmed them.”
Lee, a director in various construction companies, has been ordered to pay the remainder of the debt with RWS lawyers citing inconsistencies in his evidence as being key to the finding.
