It’s often said there’s a decent percentage of Parisians who’ve never visited the Eiffel Tower or New Yorkers who’ve never taken in a Broadway Show. Why? Because it’s there, and always will be. In a similar vein, there are a lot of executives living in Macau – many of whom receive IAG Breakfast Briefing every morning – who overlook The House of Dancing Water.
I have a confession to make – despite having lived permanently in Macau for nearly a decade now I’ve only seen The House of Dancing Water a handful of times. In fact, it took several years before I saw it for the first time! It’s easy to forget we have an absolutely superb world-class show right here on our doorstep. In fact, at the opening of Morpheus earlier this month I was having a discussion with a friend who was arguing that the show was in fact the greatest resident show at any casino anywhere in the world. And after scratching my head for a while, I’m inclined to agree with him.
A few days ago, some friends from Hong Kong came to Macau and basically begged me to take them to the show – and I’m so glad they did! We were lucky enough to secure excellent seats (just above the splash zone!) and I settled back for 90 minutes of simply superb acrobatics, dancing and diving. Unlike some other shows, The House of Dancing Water is easily coherent and makes sense to both Chinese and Western sensibilities. There’s just the right mix of beauty, sensuality and spectacular acrobatics.
And of course there are those amazing motorbike feats, which don’t make a lot of sense in the context of the show but are so breathtaking that nobody cares!
The one thing I can say about The House of Dancing Water is that where it truly does stand head and shoulders above all other resident shows – including those in Las Vegas – is the emotion it evokes in the audience. In this sense it transcends language, age and culture. As you leave the theatre the excitement and buzz amongst the crowd is palpable.
I won’t mention anything that’s worthy of a spoiler alert – instead, why not do yourself a favour, grab your partner or some friends and go to see The House of Dancing Water one more time. It’s well worth it and a wonderful way to spend an evening.
