Japan IR bill likely delayed after opposition targets house Chairman

Japan IR bill likely delayed after opposition targets house Chairman

The Lower House vote on Japan’s IR Implementation Bill looks set to be delayed until next week after the country’s leading opposition parties submitted a motion to dismiss the Chairman of the House of Representatives Cabinet Committee, Daishiro Yamagiwa.

The motion was put forward late Tuesday after Yamagiwa made the decision earlier in the day to hold a Wednesday vote on the casino bill – which would officially sanction casino gaming in Japan.

Instead, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner Komeito will have to wait for Thursday’s vote on the motion against Yamagiwa, meaning a vote on the casino bill can’t take place until Friday at the earliest, according to Jiji Press.

Japan’s opposition parties believe they have not been given sufficient time to vote on the IR bill.

“More and more problems have been emerging in 18 hours of deliberations so far,” said CDPJ Diet affairs chief Kiyomi Tsujimoto, adding that forcing the vote through “means the refusal of the government and the ruling coalition to deliberate on the bill.”
